Waterford’s Top 5 Art & Culture Spots: A Local’s Guide

So, you’re thinking about visiting Waterford and you want to experience the art and culture? That’s cool! You see, Waterford, that pretty place in the southeast of Ireland, has got history coming out of its ears, which is very, very noticeable. Very charming. 1. Waterford Treasures Medieval Museum: A Step Back in Time

Right then, first up is Waterford Treasures Medieval Museum! You’ll find it right in the heart of the city and it’s situated in what used to be a medieval church. A real ancient church too it’s almost scary how cool it is! You’re not just looking at relics, you understand. The museum shows you how folks in Waterford lived back in the day, a really long time ago. A cool feature of this exhibit shows the Great Parchment Book. As I was saying, it shows you just how important Waterford used to be as a medieval port. Very central to all kinds of activity. Trust me; history becomes a real story when you’re standing right there. Maybe grab a coffee and wander around. It’s a great little spot!

2. Bishop’s Palace: Georgian Splendor

Next stop? The Bishop’s Palace, very fancy! It’s another fantastic trip back to times long forgotten, yet this one shows a side to times gone by. A time when powdered wigs and fancy furniture ruled, in some respects. So, this palace, naturally, was home to the Waterford bishops in the 1700 and 1800’s. Yet it tells a story of Waterford’s society at the time. You can get an audio tour where you can listen to actors performing historical conversations, so you can be fully immersed. This gives you a fun way of hearing and knowing what things where like. Make sure you see the Penrose decanter! A beautiful example of Waterford crystal; and its really special.

3. Theatre Royal: Catching a Show

Do you like a little bit of drama in your life? Naturally, who doesn’t? Then go to Theatre Royal. This theatre? As a matter of fact it goes back all the way to 1785. Apparently making it one of the oldest continuously operating theaters in Ireland, if you can believe it. That! Is amazing. Loads of famous faces have tread its boards, and even nowadays, there’s all types of shows going on. Actually, from plays to musicals, to concerts, so, there’s something for everybody, clearly. Going to a show there is great for the local atmosphere. Plus, it’s right in the city centre, by the way, so it’s a simple job to pop in!

4. Waterford City Gallery: A Modern Twist

Want to experience something a bit more contemporary? In that case, check out Waterford City Gallery. That can be found in Greyfriars Municipal Art Gallery and contains shows from all forms of artists, in some respects, local and global. You might find sculptures, work, photographs…so pretty much everything! What makes this spot especially lovely? Basically, you can go to the exhibitions without having to pay a fee! That’s right free!! Perfect if you are skint and trying to take in the art in Waterford.

5. Lismore Castle Gardens: Nature Meets Art

Lastly, so let’s head a little outside of Waterford city to Lismore Castle Gardens. This is an amazing treat, naturally, especially if the weather is playing along. Even though it’s a short trip from Waterford, about an hour, this trip? Will be totally worth it. The gardens, anyway, are just stunning with centuries-old trees, flowers everywhere and modern sculptures hiding in plain sight! Make sure you give both the upper and lower gardens a stroll; and there is a lot of wonderful history to explore too! They really are something special, you know. Trust me on that!
