1. Rethymno Old Town: A Step Back in Time

Rethymno Old Town

Alright, Rethymno Old Town is almost literally right next door, which makes it that totally easy trip to make. This place is, you know, brimming with this cool Venetian history – you’ll find it’s got such narrow, winding streets, that just reveal a surprise at every turn. That’s right, you might stumble on these adorable little shops selling all kinds of local goodies, or, could be, some old building just steeped in tons of stories. Do yourself such a favor and hit up the Fortezza, it’s just that huge fortress thing overlooking the town. Wander its walls, and that view is just unreal – especially that golden hour! And, when you’re feeling peckish, you can grab a table at that taverna by the harbor and just sample some delish Cretan dishes.

2. Arkadi Monastery: A Powerful Symbol of Resistance

Arkadi Monastery

A little bit further out, it’s still, yet, an incredibly moving and that worthwhile visit. This monastery isn’t just any old building, too, it’s almost like that symbol of Cretan resistance against the Ottomans. That’s right, back in 1866, this is that place where hundreds of locals sought refuge and, sadly, ended up sacrificing themselves. That history is really that palpable when you’re wandering the grounds. The church itself, which is of course got such that stunning Venetian architecture, is that total sight. Trust me, this is not just seeing something but also, yet, connecting with that piece of Crete’s soul history in Crete.

3. Lake Kournas: Crete’s Only Freshwater Lake

Lake Kournas

Okay, for that seriously chilled-out day trip vibe, Lake Kournas, in some respects, takes the cake. Now, it’s Crete’s only freshwater lake, and those scenes are just amazing, they’re that surrounded by these looming hills. That water’s, apparently, this amazing turquoise color, and it’s almost crystal clear too. That’s right, you can rent a paddleboat and just bob around, or just kick back at that lakeside taverna. And keep your eyes peeled, we may get to see those turtles! It is such a chill contrast to those beaches. Perfect place to unwind and reconnect with nature, and in a way, it really doesn’t get more idyllic. Do stop for lunch at that great tavern a lake view.

4. Samaria Gorge: For the Hiking Enthusiast

Samaria Gorge

Are you up for this adventure? That Samaria Gorge is like, yet, Crete’s, for instance, biggie – one of those longest canyons in Europe! But is that something for total pros – expect something just a bit strenuous, a bit, a good few hours of just really hiking. But, really, every single step? More or less, it’s so rewarding. So there’s this incredible scenery everywhere you turn, the super dramatic cliffs towering above. You, just, might spot a Kri-Kri too it’s almost, those famous wild goats of Crete. Just remember good hiking boots, this decent amount of water, and that go-getting spirit – and that view when you reach the sea. In fact it will all be worth it! Enjoy your tour.
