1. Ios Town (Chora) Walking Tour
Want to get a feel for Ios right off the bat? Well, this one is for you. A walking tour through Ios Town, or Chora as the locals call it, is really a superb first stop. I mean, you actually walk those narrow, winding paths that have history just oozing out from them. I reckon, the guides actually point out all the little spots you’d usually miss – little churches, bits of old buildings, hidden courtyards, the stuff tourist guides rarely tell you about, you know? The tour is a perfect welcome, I think, plus you’ll grab nice photos, is that correct and stuff?
There is something that I found a bit special on that walking tour. You visit Panagia Gremiotissa Church at sunset, which is really wonderful. Overlooking the Aegean, it’s super beautiful, really calming, I should say. So you just soak that in. Plus you hear stories, bits and bobs from back then. It does actually give you more feel for Ios, it kind of gets under your skin.
2. Skarkos Early Cycladic Settlement Tour
Ready to geek out a bit with some seriously ancient history? Then, take this tour. It’s really taking you to Skarkos, a spot that goes back around 3000 BC, the Early Cycladic period. It’s that one, a prehistoric town that is almost always buried and is one of the well-preserved. Just listen to what it has to say. I mean, how great would it be to walk where people were hanging out thousands of years ago? Plus the archeologists are quite good too when you ask questions.
The place really brings you back. The guides usually point to all the bits you need to know, homes, and places, and, oh, tell all kind of what life actually was. Pretty unique, actually. For people like myself that loves past civilizations, that is an excellent experience. Trust me on that!
3. Homer’s Tomb Excursion
Alright, who doesn’t actually love a little bit of Greek mythology, right? What would be amazing, just like the stories, like, seriously amazing, like something that’s really interesting to do is head on over to what people believe is Homer’s Tomb. Yep, that one Homer. Author of the “Odyssey” and “Iliad”. Even supposing nobody’s actually a 100% on if it really IS his tomb, to go out there and think about whether Homer once upon a time sat there, I mean think about it. It does tend to set that imagination on fire, truly it does.
The spot’s kind of amazing too, quiet and looking over the water. It really provides something that makes you want to read a “Odyssey” once more, really a “Homer moment”, is that right? Definitely something to include for people that wants a taste of old Greece.
