Peaks Island Food: Top 5 Spots You Gotta Try

Peaks Island, just a short ferry trip from Portland, Maine, has quite a reputation. But the food, is that any good? You might find some real treasures if you know where to look. Seriously, though, it’s not just about escaping the city; it’s also about finding some amazing chow. And I am talking about seafood shacks to spots with some surprisingly great views. That said, let’s take a peep at five places on Peaks Island where your taste buds can take a joy ride; and perhaps, maybe your belly might thank you. This should hopefully take the sting out of figuring out where to grab a bite, so too it’s almost like having a foodie friend point you in the right direction.

1. The Cockeyed Gull: Fresh Seafood with a View

The Cockeyed Gull Restaurant Peaks Island ME

Alright, the Cockeyed Gull is probably your first stop for really outstanding seafood when you hop off that ferry. It’s just a quick jaunt from the ferry landing. Very few restaurants have what I’m gonna mention, anyway, so be aware of it. Beyond the fact it’s super handy to the ferry, you’re greeted with outdoor seating that gives you killer views of Casco Bay. But, very, very often it has more to offer. Think of Maine, you’re already almost seeing yourself in a postcard kinda view. Really, the draw here is the crazy fresh seafood. In fact, The Gull pulls from the day’s catch – imagine chowder that tastes like the sea itself. I’d start with the lobster, because honestly you absolutely should. Or, a buttery, creamy chowder – it is sort of like diving into the ocean, only warmer. Whatever you do, don’t skip on whatever fish they’re offering as a special because, by the way, if you want a true taste of the Atlantic, it has got you covered. So too, the casual, sea breezy atmosphere really captures that Maine island spirit; maybe that’s what does it for you!

2. Milly’s Skillet: Diner Delights with Island Charm

Milly's Skillet Peaks Island Maine

Milly’s Skillet, tucked into the heart of Peaks Island, seems like the kind of diner where everyone really knows your name – if you’re around enough that, that is. Now, that location could potentially be slightly difficult. Is that true though? Well, in some respects, not really; still, this is that comfortable spot serving up all your greasy spoon faves, only with a seriously cool island spin. Milly’s has things for you, often. As a matter of fact, for those hankering for a filling breakfast, I recommend you try the blueberry pancakes. Yeah, pancakes, that’s my pitch. And then that’s exactly when the syrup will become the food muse that you’re now telling your friends about when talking about this adventure. The coffee they serve there, or so I’m told, arguably, tends to get you fired up for your whole day of adventuring on the island. In fact, you should even check it out at lunchtime; for example, like the seafood baskets and some killer burgers because, clearly, they aim to hit that hunger nail directly on the head. Their blueberry pancakes are what you’d almost consider the definition of comfort food! Because if you have never had this, it could be great; or not; who am I to assume?

3. Down Front: Pizza Perfection by the Bay

Down Front Restaurant Peaks Island ME

Pizza with a view? It’s almost always been my go-to when seeing if it could have made the list; because for me at least, that’s sort of what I crave! Really, Down Front, sitting right on the waterfront, is arguably one of the best joints to grab pizza. So they use pretty fresh ingredients to achieve some magical taste sensation with all their pizzas; for example, like your hand getting ready to stuff your mouth. If that’s pizza for you, awesome! But as a matter of fact, what makes Down Front exceptional is the location! Also, is it possible there might be more to offer? Obviously! It’s super chill so maybe that vibe gives way to good times. Just a little pointer. Try and grab a spot on the deck where you can almost see the boats bobbing while you get some amazing pepperoni grease and crust. If you are a salad fanatic, don’t stress. Clearly, you can order one there, and apparently, there is plenty of variety. Down Front makes things pretty relaxed. On the other hand, let’s talk about food for a second. Let me give you a nudge towards the local favorite. Is that true? Potentially; who am I to be the authority on pizza, though?

4. Hannigan’s Island Market: Gourmet Goodies and Picnic Provisions

Hannigan's Island Market Peaks Island Maine

Hannigan’s Island Market isn’t really like the food spots listed above. Maybe that’s why it’s listed. The Island Market is super well stocked. Like honestly, maybe too well stocked! Anyway, whether it’s meats, cheeses, breads or little snacks, it’s well rounded. Now what makes Hannigan’s so brilliant is it’s location on the island; as a matter of fact, very handy. Still, pack yourself some sandwiches and head over to a beach, or heck even the rocky coast if you’re so inclined. Oh and that might actually bring you to paradise. Of course not really; although who am I to say where paradise may or may not be?! This will let you plan the best darned picnic ever! If not here, it will somewhere. They probably have some fancy drinks. Also, are their fancy snacks? Obviously! Hannigan’s might give you that something that tickles you fancy in that right spot, and maybe even make that day truly memorable, even in a small way!

5. The Peaks Island House: Elevated Dining, Local Flavors

Peaks Island House Restaurant Maine

Okay, now if you’re keen for something, perhaps maybe fancier (but just a little bit), try to find the Peaks Island House. Clearly, it’s been there for awhile; almost from the olden days! Obviously not. Really, I’m only being semi serious. A little side note, this landmark spot gives really gorgeous panoramic ocean vistas and maybe gives the taste buds something different. A real big draw here are some beautifully plated dinners. Honestly they taste real great, very high quality too. We often only consider certain locations; this could be a place where you can treat yourself and others with great island flavors. Because as you look at their food and drink menus, hopefully you’ll be wowed!
