Odessa Foodie Top 5: Eat & Drink Like a Local
Odessa, a pretty special city right on the Black Sea, offers a seriously interesting blend of cultures, and, of course, that includes some genuinely fantastic eats. Beyond the beaches and historical sites, there’s a vibrant culinary scene that might be just waiting to be explored. I want to share a handful of really awesome spots that I’ve personally discovered during my visits. It’s almost like planning a food trip, and honestly, who wouldn’t want to do that?
1. Privoz Market: A Feast for the Senses
Privoz Market? Seriously, it isn’t just any ordinary market, oh no. Actually, It is this sprawling place, practically bursting with everything imaginable, and is that place you simply have to see. I mean, the history alone! Dating way, way back to the 1800s, Privoz is much more than a shopping destination; so, in a way, it’s like stepping back in time. Imagine walking row after row, with vendors practically yelling out deals on the freshest produce, fish that practically sparkles, and spices that give off such amazing scents. It can feel a little chaotic, yet this controlled chaos gives this market its really, really charming feel. Oh, and don’t even get me going on the bachelors that can be found there!
One time, so there I was, hunting around for something to cook a great dinner, and it was there when I came across this elderly lady that was selling homemade брынза (brinza) cheese. The best brinza? It tasted like it came directly from the countryside; she basically gave me the whole back story about her family’s secret recipe. Like honestly it’s moments like these that make Privoz not just a market, It’s almost like this actual experience, really!

It’s a genuinely interesting mix of local cuisine with some seriously really, really great European twists. Is it expensive? Typically, Yes, but is that a worthwhile treat.
On my birthday, a year or so back, my wife and I ate dinner at Bernardazzi. The sommelier—this guy? The guy seriously knew his stuff; this kind of expert explained how he took care when making each wine, really helping enhance all our dishes. I grabbed the Black Sea snails (which is pretty strange for me to do usually) for starters, and seriously, those seriously changed the whole picture of Ukrainian Cuisine for me!
