So, I’m hoping to, in a way, break it all down for you—the good stuff, the not-so-good stuff, and everything in between. Basically, think of this, as I was saying, as that straight-talking friend who’s already been there and can give you the lowdown. Read our full review: Milford Sound Cruise Full Review and Details

What’s the Big Deal About Milford Sound Anyway?

Milford Sound Fjord

So, before we even get into talking about the cruises themselves, it is almost worth asking the question: what’s the fuss with Milford Sound? That, you know, is down in Fjordland National Park, which sounds pretty epic to begin with, yet I’ll paint you a picture. We’re talking dramatic cliffs that rise straight up from the water, like, crazy waterfalls cascading down after it rains, and the whole area feels so ancient. Like, you wouldn’t be that surprised if a dinosaur showed up. Actually, it was carved out by glaciers, very, very slowly, so it’s pretty special from a natural history perspective, and I’d add that Rudyard Kipling even called it the “eighth wonder of the world,” which, really, is saying something, so to get the full effect, I am thinking, you’ll want to do a cruise. Picking Your Cruise: Types and What to Look For

Milford Sound cruise boat

OK, so, that is where things, I guess, can get a little, just a little complicated. See, they have heaps of different cruises in Milford Sound, which tends to mean finding that right one for you can be tricky. That is really not my intention! So, here’s that, you know, basic breakdown: that, very, very first, is the ‘Scenic Cruise’, where it just drifts around the fjord, often getting right up next to the waterfalls, so you are able to feel that spray, and basically you sit back and soak in the views. Then they also have that ‘Nature Cruise,’ where, in a way, you are really geared toward wildlife lovers, they, very, very often, are led by guides that tell you, you know, everything about the seals, penguins, and dolphins you might spot. I almost forgot the overnight cruise, for you know those folks that don’t want that cruise to end, this will take you, very, very far into the Sound where it is usually calmer and with fewer people, I guess, which, apparently, can make it more magical, but those cost a bit extra. Actually, some companies, you see, now even offer small boat experiences, just for fewer crowds, you know. See Prices, Availability & Reserve Now (Milford Sound Cruise Availability)

What to Expect Onboard

OK, now this part is fairly essential, and so it’s good to chat about this before going. On most cruises, as I was saying, they do have indoor and outdoor viewing areas, I guess so that you have that space to stay cozy if it happens to rain – and let me let you know, it rains a lot in Milford Sound, as a matter of fact. Anyway, they also often serve that food, like your lunch or dinner, that it’s typically that buffet style thing. It feels pretty essential to find out just what is included, though, that sometimes tea and coffee are free, and some companies might also charge for that, so too make certain you look. So, then, there are also things such as live commentary, which, you see, can truly add to that experience. I find the really decent guides tell stories about the Maori history or just about the geology that’s neat, I am telling you. So, some people love, literally, taking that self-guided tour for some quiet moments, so too that is also a preference, I guess. Basically, expect that trip to, very often, last between 2-3 hours, a bit, unless you pick those longer, more pricey cruises of course. Getting to Milford Sound: That’s Half the Battle

Road to Milford Sound

Alright, getting there. And I mean, don’t kid yourself, I feel this can be an all-day job! And look, most people drive from Queenstown, which, I think, is about a four-hour trip, minimum — not counting stops and all of those little delays, like that sheep on the road I bumped into once! And just so that you understand, this route could be kinda curvy, but I feel, truly, it is also really beautiful, I find there’s lots to see along that way such as mirror lakes, which I believe is neat for taking a photo, just there. Anyway, lots of tour companies in Queenstown also run day trips, for example I’d consider jumping on one of those. So too if you do not fancy all that driving yourself. It does, yet, mean you’ll be on somebody else’s schedule. Then there is flying from Queenstown. Now that’s pretty pricey, it seems to me, and you know the weather does occasionally get kinda iffy, but too then again you may get the best view this way, arguably, if it goes well. Anyway, whatever you pick, it’s also a grand idea to double-check those road conditions, I guess before setting off in winter because they can sometimes get a bit, just a bit, hairy, right. What to Bring: Being Prepared Makes a Difference

things to bring Milford Sound trip

Here, as I was saying, is my, sort of, ‘do not forget’ checklist. Like your raincoat. Very Essential. As I have hinted, Milford Sound gets heaps of rain, for instance. Seriously, prepare for that. It might be, potentially, sunny when you set out in the morning, as a matter of fact, but also might change very fast, basically, there’s nothing that compares to exploring a wonder of the planet in soggy clothing. It’s not the best. Likewise, I would almost pack a sweater or something fairly snug, to be comfy and easy. Very often it does actually get very breezy when you’re out on that boat, literally, near that water, I promise you. That insect repellent, also! The sandflies in Milford Sound will drive you totally crazy, it is often not a lie. Honestly. You’ll require a good camera because you would not ever want to run out of space on that phone during the great landscapes that will arise from literally everywhere. Also, I feel some binoculars may come in handy, if you are, like your self-proclaimed twitcher. I often love them myself. See Prices, Availability & Reserve Now (Milford Sound Travel Tips)

Photo Opportunities: Get That Insta-Worthy Shot

Milford Sound photography tips

If there is something that sounds like a good plan, it, very often, involves photo shoots when cruising Milford Sounds, there are good things to capture for certain! Arguably, I reckon Mitre Peak, which has three different mountains, is easily that most snapped point, yet just so that you know, getting that shot perfectly straight is pretty difficult depending upon how clear that day gets, it almost makes it trickier sometimes. Stirling Falls is something that you want to plan in those moments. So, very, very often that captain drives that ship closer, that it will almost touch that face, but be watchful in the meantime and that you keep any device water protected when near or at any water feature. Next up are just any moments you spot that wildlife along with all of their behaviours, seals usually lay around, literally near certain stones along a way. When a rainbow shows it turns into very beautiful scenic moment too for pictures, but not necessarily from the water, you may be required to walk a touch away from everybody for that shot, I reckon, for clarity. Don’t just stay still in that seat all the time, literally. You must have mobility just in time for when these events pop in, honestly, I assure you there is lots of moving in these photographic trips so I, for one, would propose to bring that bottle for all of these memories. The Best Time to Go: Weather and Crowds

Milford Sound weather and crowds

Seasoned folk often say that Summer lasts between December–February and that weather is usually at that calmest that point with that added sunlight out when they are out too. Summer comes in for a big showing and gets everyone interested, then Autumn and that slow showing just around the turn of March usually starts and shows calm scenic points from orange colour pallete views along all coasts. Basically crowds diminish around those Winter seasons where the chances increase for snow that usually runs on most days just nearby to this spectacle; June and August often can get more crowded from families or those going skiing for tourism also. One tip might also go around travelling on off days to prevent such queues or over populated cruises and boats; too also consider all school vacation breaks around any certain locations just to make for a less clustered experience or travels. Arguably. I can see them taking trips there as good fun on this tip here. This could well come in for better value overall for them. Basically it gives something great if there ends up with not so much traffic in certain parts where this may occur. Basically this type goes so perfectly when these are being tested there at these instances for how clear it needs just exactly here. Basically I reckon they need more than it does not usually cost. Making it Budget-Friendly: Saving Money on Your Cruise

budget friendly Milford Sound cruise

Basically I find there are ways that someone going around NZ who needs not so much financial planning from going out all so pricey that this can save themselves. If there ever shows anything I just go on those cheaper travel times in order that way its more less stress that way, arguably. It seems that what works and saves are those lunch items bought and pre prepared to take when getting to there at NZ there rather just spend more than often; but yet still eating too right? I am sure with so so planning this is a really a better bet overall in practice that shows this when trying and making better out coming savings. Arguably, lots of companies could say you’d love to check if its still worth planning because just then its good that then I find I still wanna bring some extra dosh just near because. Very often I recommend just keep things less complex with those hotel offers just so in order of being around this I might just tell you still is just nice to show because that this might actually give savings like. It may occur when it often occurs with just too not having too because often because this really works fine with.
