Malaga, that stunning city hugging the southern coast of Spain, is famous for loads of things, isn’t it? Very attractive beaches, impressive historical sites, and just a great vibe, yet its culinary scene often just gets slightly overlooked. Yet, believe you me, Malaga’s food and drinks are absolutely worth the trip. I mean, you go anywhere and try the food. From mouthwatering seafood to sweet local wine, there is almost an explosion of different tastes to discover. So, let’s check out five must-try items to have, okay? So, when you get to visit Malaga, you’re super prepared to dig in, in that case. It’s almost like having a delicious roadmap.
1. Espetos: Grilled Sardine Skewers
Espetos, those very simple, though utterly delicious, grilled sardine skewers, are like your welcome sign to Malaga, very! They’re completely more than just food, still; they show how Malaga rolls, pretty much. You see, the fishermen spear these sardines, typically six at a time, on thin canes and grill them over open wood fires on the beach, usually, right next to the sea. As a matter of fact, this is super old style, like over centuries, still! They say that this started at El Zagal, an old beach restaurant, too it’s almost iconic, that. It’s absolutely an art, believe you me, because the person grilling them has to know the fire very, very well, keeping it just right so the sardines cook well, like, yet stay tender and moist. So, having them fresh off the grill with a bit of sea salt and maybe a spritz of lemon, is like heaven. Find a chiringuito (beach bar) that is like your style and just order some – the real taste of Malaga’s shore awaits, basically! And hey, maybe sip some nearby drinks too? I am sure it’s a moment, that, not to be forgotten at the end of the day. You can practically feel the city.

2. Gazpachuelo: A Warm Fish and Potato Soup
Now, right, if you picture gazpacho, that classic cold tomato soup, clear your mind. Gazpachuelo is actually different. So, it is a warm soup that comes from Malaga’s fishing villages. It tends to be super creamy and flavorful. This tasty dish is completely made with a base of fish broth, potatoes, some mayonnaise (yes, mayonnaise!), and maybe a drop or two of lemon juice. As a matter of fact, that is like a party in your mouth with the flavor! Typically, you see white fish like hake and some shellfish swimming around the bowl. So, it is this comforting and rich flavour, that’s almost perfect, isn’t it? Usually, I try to have it in the cooler months because it fills you up so wonderfully. If you find it on a menu, usually order it to try something very different from the normal tourist path. As I was saying, many don’t really leave the cities. Okay, as a matter of fact, it is real Malaga that is awaiting us!

3. Jamón Ibérico: Iberian Ham
Ok, so jamón ibérico is very, very special cured ham, which isn’t originally just from Malaga. Jamon can definitely be enjoyed everywhere. This Spanish treasure definitely deserves a spot on our list, since you will find it at the heart of many tapas places, too. Jamón ibérico comes from Iberian pigs that just chill roaming around eating acorns (bellotas) and grass. Actually, that is why the ham winds up with like a nutty, rich flavor, just a little! It’s more than just ham; this is definitely something that melts in your mouth, almost like butter, still! The cool spots cut it thinly, so, showing its amazing marbling, that is fantastic. Get a plate of it with some local cheese and bread, and pair it with a glass of Spanish wine for, just an epic, pretty classic Spanish vibe, anyway! As I was saying, you will find the dish enjoyed best out with your close friends, seriously. As a matter of fact, this just cannot be missed!
4. Sweet Malaga Wine: A Fortified Treat
So, when you need something just slightly sweet, check out Malaga’s famous sweet wine! They are rather delicious. So, this wine goes way back. That is quite old! The Phoenicians and Romans almost helped with making it famous centuries ago, very. Created mainly from the Pedro Ximénez and Moscatel grapes. You’ll see a whole range of colors and tastes; very light to dark. To tell the truth I favor it after having my food; since this tends to be the perfect little dessert. Typically go for a glass at a local bodega, too. That’s the traditional Spanish winery. You’ll just love how very unique and traditional that tastes!

Lastly, but extremely importantly, is the pescaíto frito, aka. The fried fish, isn’t it! A true southern Spanish food stable food. You might actually see many places serving up an awesome array of different locally caught fish, very! You’ll have many different small fish, squid, and prawns very, very well battered and fried till golden. I mean it just comes crunchy and really yummy! That definitely has got that classic seafood fix sorted. Just use a squeeze of lemon, then pair them, right?, With an extremely cold beer, as well. This should not be missed. I am talking about relaxing the Spanish sun, pretty much, at its greatest form! In fact, you will enjoy an extremely laid-back dining affair. If I can mention to try anything! This one is, I really believe, absolutely critical.
