What’s the Kuna Vela Morning Snorkel and Sailing Tour All About?
Okay, so the Kuna Vela tour is basically, that is, a half-day trip, typically it lasts about four hours, departing from Playas Del Coco. The main draws are sailing, seeing, you know, the coastline, and, so, getting some snorkeling in. I will break down what, that is, the tour actually includes. It’s, arguably, designed for those, like, who want a little bit of adventure mixed with relaxation, all on, like, a catamaran.
- Setting Sail: Usually departs in the morning.

My Experience on the Kuna Vela Tour
So, from my own, like, experience, the tour kicked off, basically, pretty smoothly. Meeting at the beach was simple, and boarding the catamaran was not too bad. The crew was pretty nice, offering a quick briefing about, well, the plan for, that is, the morning.
When we set off, the views, those were, admittedly, pretty stunning. Looking back at the coastline of Playas Del Coco as we sailed away was a great start. It’s, clearly, very relaxing to just sit on, like, the deck and watch the scenery go by.
The snorkeling part was alright. So, the spots we visited had some fish and coral, yet, the visibility wasn’t perfect, yet decent enough. Also, the provided snorkeling gear was, just a bit, worn, yet functional.
They had snacks and drinks constantly available. You know, they had your usual assortment of fruit, chips, and drinks. Also, the vibe on the boat was very relaxed. A decent mix of people, so that is to say couples, families, and solo travelers. It was pretty, really, easy to chat with others or just chill by yourself.

What I Liked and Didn’t Like
Basically, a review isn’t that good if I don’t talk about both the good stuff and, you know, what was not that good, right?
What I Liked
- The Scenery: I mean, sailing along the coast of Costa Rica is super, almost, hard to beat.
- Relaxing Vibe: Very smooth experience to just relax.
- Crew’s Attitude: The crew, mostly, was helpful and seemed pretty upbeat.
What I Didn’t Like
- Snorkeling Quality: That could be better. Maybe choose better spots, but sometimes, right, it’s just the luck of the draw, so that is to say dependent on water conditions.
- Gear Condition: It needs some updating.
Is the Kuna Vela Tour Worth It?
So, if you’re, like, asking me if you should spend the money, I’d say maybe, arguably. The Kuna Vela tour is, I guess, worth it if you, also, value a relaxing sailing experience more than the snorkeling itself. For those who are super into snorkeling, that is, you might find it slightly lacking.
Basically, you’re paying for, still, a decent overall experience, basically that is good for all ages. So, if you want something that’s easy and relaxing, this fits the bill.
Tips for Taking the Kuna Vela Tour
- Bring Sunscreen: The Costa Rican sun is so intense, arguably even in the morning. Reapply often.
- Bring a Towel: A lot of tour operators are not able to provide this.
- Think about a Waterproof Camera: Basically, to grab photos when you’re in the water, or even from the boat, still to protect your phone.
- Motion Sickness: If you tend to get seasick, take something ahead of time. The boat ride is smooth, but it’s, so, better to be safe.
