1. La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club

Okay, first up is La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club. Basically, La MaMa, started way back in 1961 by Ellen Stewart, is, that, a big part of the history of Off-Off-Broadway. Looking at its founding performance space, you walk in, you practically inhale decades of artistic guts; the space is oozing dedication! Over the years, La MaMa really has featured some people before they seriously blew up; people have started here very raw. Think of figures like Harvey Fierstein, Bette Midler, and even Robert De Niro strutted the stages. Very talented group, too, and now? Very, very influential. This location doesn’t hold back, whether they’re presenting groundbreaking plays, modern dance, or wild performance art; basically it makes it, very consistently, a top-notch place to watch folks breaking artistic barriers.

2. The Public Theater

Next stop: The Public Theater, which, actually, is right around the corner in Astor Place. So, The Public Theater didn’t start in that super beautiful landmark building – you probably saw it – but, like your classic startup origin story, it’s actually in a church! Offering theatrical productions for over 50 years, they’re practically an institution, known, too, for launching hits like “Hair,” “Hamilton,” and many of Shakespeare in the Park productions that pretty much everyone flocks to in the summertime at Central Park. First Street Green almost sits nestled, too, right within the middle of the East Village on First Street. Very convenient to go to, actually, from the other places. Founded in 1980, the building really grew into this gathering location for lots of different types of subculture people; it actually grew from the Colab’s Real Estate Show protest.

With that history of social stuff, ABC No Rio puts on a wild, ever-changing array of workshops and exhibitions in arts, film and all types of loud punk rock shows; that offers this non-hierarchical, do-it-yourself spirit to art-making. You are, too, just seeing pieces done by artists driven with social messages and it makes every showing very authentic; go and participate and feel empowered!
