Dalmatia Art Scene: 5 Spots You Must See
Croatia’s Dalmatia area is very stunning, featuring coastal spots and culture just packed into one place. So, it’s almost more than just beaches and cool water; it’s got very interesting things happening culturally too. Visiting, you may find yourself wandering around for a bit, checking sights or wondering where to start, that is if art’s a thing you want to experience. If you like art, I would say it’s very lucky to be in this place and it may just be the time of your life! It’s not tricky to find somewhere to begin if you think you might like seeing art and cool spots, such as galleries and historical must-sees.
1. Diocletian’s Palace in Split: A Living Museum
You simply have to start at Diocletian’s Palace when in Split. Now, you may think it’s really just an ancient Roman building. Well, arguably, that’s somewhat true, yet really it’s more like a big piece of art because it’s always shifting and lives on! Over the years, it shifted a little in style, becoming home to stores and dwellings all over, so you are basically just walking inside a very old collage or building that is a work of art right now, but it has changed a little bit through all those years.
I think one interesting place inside Diocletian’s Palace that is totally worth a visit is the Cathedral of Saint Domnius. It used to be Diocletian’s tomb a long time ago, so the old area still looks amazing with old designs and just things to see, so it is just neat in a way. If that isn’t to your tastes, you may wander by all the little nooks and areas and try the new spots with work from today, or maybe try something totally different in any old spot.
2. Ivan Meštrović Gallery: Sculptures with Soul
If you want somewhere with just really intense work, you should go see the Ivan Meštrović Gallery, set up a bit like the man’s former home, that too also acts like its own big piece of art! Meštrović himself is super famous in Croatia as a sculptor, a master craftsman, so his bits are very striking. The gallery holds his early work plus some of his most well known things he has done.
If you want something great to check out in terms of what’s on show, one thing I really enjoyed when checking out the gallery were all of his religious bits, which he makes sort of modern but very passionate still, which is neat, in my opinion. Now if all that is very “ehh” to you, there is a very pretty spot for gazing around right outside by the gallery which might give you what you wanted.
3. Hvar’s Art Scene: A Blend of Tradition and Modernity
The spot to travel to for checking some culture in general is very likely Hvar because there are places of really old origin mixed with culture spots that are a bit new. To go there is a special experience you might just remember from your journeys; you may even get a picture to remember it! A building there to see if old construction gets you jazzed is the Hvar Fortress, for that super old look.
There are also galleries spotted near Hvar near the water, spots such as Galerija Arsenal Hvar which display work with different backgrounds like bits made in that town plus bits done from away, giving all who look there a special point to go see for any fresh take.
4. Zadar’s Sea Organ and Greeting to the Sun: Art Meets Nature
Over at Zadar is a cool way Dalmatia gives nature an “art feel”. What that truly means is seeing the Sea Organ and Greeting to the Sun. The Sea Organ gets energy from water crashing so as to create almost singing musical pieces which makes going there interesting to the ears as if something were alive! The Greeting to the Sun gives something pretty to observe while gazing around after it gets darker; lights from the paneling become very vivid as people watch. You might say they put two pieces with the area, so something pretty that is almost alive in nature becomes special.
With how it gives something memorable, you might want it shown more in modern displays. Near Zadar, there may be several other art galleries with totally amazing things, I’d imagine! With everything Dalmatia gives, spots that are both cool and different can just always get discovered anywhere.
5. Trogir: A UNESCO Treasure Trove
The place you should visit to see an older design feel with a very historic touch is Trogir, a town labeled a UNESCO Heritage place. Getting around you’ll likely see its buildings are really conserved still in the Romanesque look. Wandering can make seeing the neat old Cathedral of St. Lawrence a worthwhile choice.
Even without its older look, there could probably be spots somewhere with fresh takes from folks alive right now like around Kamerlengo Fortress! To come to Trogir is an easy thing anyone is going to remember because the town is old yet gives an active feel that always holds true.
