The very core of Zhangjiajie’s appeal, for me anyway, really lies in places like Yuanjiajie and Tianzi Mountain, where, you know, those tall, thin sandstone pillars that supposedly inspired the ‘Avatar’ movie views are found. Getting to Yuanjiajie involves taking the Bailong Elevator, which, by the way, is a glass elevator built right into the side of a cliff, basically taking you up very, very fast. That ride, honestly, gives you an intense shot of height, and then you’re right there among those towering stone creations, which seem to just reach to the heavens. Standing on the bridges and viewing spots there, I mean, you feel genuinely surrounded by these giant rock fingers that are, basically, just standing still amidst the clouds, which truly makes for an unbelievable sight. Tianzi Mountain, similarly to Yuanjiajie, offers these amazing spots to look out, but with, you know, its own sort of distinct atmosphere, often a bit more misty, giving it a somewhat mysterious look. The misty conditions can make the tall rocks seem to disappear and reappear, almost as if they are playing hide-and-seek, adding, honestly, a magical kind of feel to the whole view. There’s this particular formation, really, called the ‘He Long Park,’ where, you know, you can see ‘The Imperial Writing Brush Peaks,’ which kind of look like a collection of brushes standing upright, ready for a truly cosmic painter. We ate a dish with pickled cabbage and also some local river fish, both of which had, you know, these really strong tastes that felt very new and, quite frankly, very satisfying, honestly a genuine food adventure.
