What’s So Special About a Night Snorkel?

underwater night scene

OK, so you may be wondering, what exactly makes a night snorkel a unique experience? We wondered the same thing! Usually, when folks go snorkeling, it’s during the daytime when everything is super easy to see because of the sun. So, at night, the ocean really becomes a whole new place. Is that not amazing? Lots of sea critters that chill during the day become way more active when the sun goes down. You could even witness hunting behaviors you just won’t see in daytime. So, add some underwater lights, a guide pointing things out, is that OK, and you’re suddenly a part of this mysterious, secretive world! Anyway, in contrast to daytime snorkeling, is that correct, night snorkeling offers a glimpse into the secret lives of sea turtles, that’s right, plus some other cool underwater creatures.

Turtle Town: Why This Location Rocks

Turtle Town Maui

OK, so let’s zoom in on Turtle Town. Why is this spot so incredibly well-known? Well, for one thing, this spot, that is off the coast of Maui, happens to be known for its green sea turtle population. Seriously, I mean it’s practically swimming with these amazing creatures! You may get up close, just a little. So, these guys are just usually chilling near the reefs, that is because they feast on the algae, and are used to seeing people during the day. But, nighttime is totally something else, which, again, means is super different! Snorkeling here lets you observe these majestic turtles in their restful, nightly behaviors. It really is a unique, slightly cool opportunity. Still, it is worth it.

What You Might See in the Dark

bioluminescent plankton

Alright, let’s talk about the main stars of the show – what marine critters might show up. Well, green sea turtles are nearly always there. So, just keep an eye out, right? So, during the day these creatures are eating, but, so during the night they’re generally asleep. That’s absolutely alright, still, they’re used to being near the reef, so they won’t swim away if you go near them. Then, too it’s almost other cool stuff you may catch are eels, crabs, lobsters, and perhaps even some reef sharks, is that OK! Some trips also feature bioluminescent plankton, that actually light up the water when it is disturbed! So, if you see a sparkle in the water, it actually could be the plankton doing their thing.

Tips for Making the Most of Your Night Snorkel

snorkeling tips

Want to get the biggest kick out of this trip? So, here’s a couple pointers from what we’ve picked up. Being totally comfortable in the water makes a giant difference. Seriously, I mean it. That could mean hopping into a pool a handful of times just before your adventure to simply get used to swimming. As a matter of fact, that would be OK. So, listen closely when the guide is briefing you about safe snorkeling. As a matter of fact, doing so would be beneficial to you. Avoid getting separated. Is that alright? That, too, can affect your mood about the trip, can’t it? Is that OK? Finally, try to relax. Alright? So, breathing slowly also allows you to see even more of the water. Then you will remember to not shine the light directly in animals’ eyes.
